Noted Florida attorney appointed to leadership position with the Florida Bar.
WEST PALM BEACH, FL (AttorneyNewsWire.com) — July 9, 2009 — Gary Lesser, Managing Partner of Lesser, Lesser, Landy & Smith, PLLC, has been appointed Vice Chair of The Florida Bar Advertising Committee (2009-2010), which serves to uphold pertinent Florida Bar Ethics Rules governing advertising. He served as the Chair of the Palm Beach County Bar Association’s Medical Legal Committee, and was Chair of the Palm Beach County Bar Association’s Professionalism Committee for many years.
Lesser served on the Florida Bar Professional Ethics Committee, including as the Chair of the Committee, which reviewed professional ethics inquiries and promulgated Ethics Opinions on important issues. As Vice Chair of The Florida Bar Advertising Committee, Lesser and fellow committee member review newspaper, television, and radio advertisements, submitted by law firms. where there has been an appeal of a Staff Ethics Attorney’s decisions. Their review ensures that advertisements comply with the pertinent Florida Bar Ethics Rules.
“A lawyer’s sole purpose is to help clients, and some of the ads on television today are just marketing ploys that confuse and mislead viewers,” noted Lesser. “Some of the ads feature actors dressed as and posing as policemen, doctors, firefighters and paramedics to infer to the viewer that the particular law firm promoted in the ad is endorsed by these professionals, which is ethically impermissible.”
Does the viewer know that the people in the ad are just actors?
“Not necessarily,” explained Lesser. “My goal in serving as the Advertising Committee Vice Chair is to help stem the tide of client confusion and questionable advertising by non-compliant lawyers, and to assist the committee in making sure that all presented advertisements serve as informative and educational, thereby empowering the client to effectively choose the best attorney for his/her case.”
“Gary Lesser has continuously demonstrated his dedication to volunteerism and outstanding abilities as a prior chair of the Florida Bar’s Professional Ethics Committee,” noted Florida Bar President Jesse H. Diner, Esq. “I am pleased to have had the opportunity to appoint Gary to another Bar committee leadership role, and I am confident his work ethic and acumen will justify his selection for this important assignment.”
Florida State Senator Dave Aronberg added that, “Gary Lesser always gets the job done! He is a true leader in the community and always goes beyond the call of duty. He will take his new Florida Bar position seriously, working hard to make sure that legal professionals are responsible in their communications and education, and held accountable for upholding their commitment to their clients.”
A native Floridian, Lesser was born in West Palm Beach, FL and graduated from Forest Hill High School. He attended George Washington University, where he graduated with a B.A. in International Affairs. He then earned his Juris Doctorate at University of Miami School of Law.
